HARRY POTTER AND PRISONER OF AZKABAN

The third Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, opened on May 30,
2004, in the United Kingdom and June 4, 2004, in the United States. As readers of the books know, the third one introduces the character of Sirius Black, brilliantly played here by Gary Oldman. At the start, he has just escaped from Azkaban, a maximum-security wizard prison, and is believed to be on his way to attack Harry Potter at Hogwarts. Dementors—a sort of magical prison guard—are sent to Hogwarts to try to stop him. By the end of the book (and the movie), we learn some surprising things about Sirius, and about the night Harry’s parents were killed.

We also meet Professor Lupin (played by David Thewlis), the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, who turns out to have secrets of his own. The last two Defense Against the Dark Arts professors made it through only one year at Hogwarts each; will he turn out to be different? And there’s Professor Trelawney (Emma Thompson), the Divination professor whose predictions sometimes actually come true.

In addition to these new characters, most of the cast of the first two films has returned for the third, with Michael Gambon replacing the late
Richard Harris in the role of Dumbledore. Hagrid is now the Care of Magical Creatures instructor, and his first lesson, with a hippogriff named Buckbeak, has important results for the rest of the film. We also get to see part of a Quidditch match, and some very, very creepy dementors.

New Director

The third film has a new director, Alfonso Cuarón, taking the place of Chris Columbus. The difference between the two is clear in every scene. Columbus’s films are straightfoward retellings of the first two Harry Potter books; while they can’t show everything from the books, they follow the story pretty closely in the parts that are there. Cuarón, on the other hand, uses the third book as a starting point, but changes a lot. Part of this can be seen in how much he cuts out—his film is shorter than the previous one, even though it’s based on a longer book. He focuses on the part of the story about Sirius Black, and a bit about Buckbeak. Almost everything else—the contest between the houses at Hogwarts, Percy’s naming as Best Boy, the introduction of Cedric Diggory and Cho Chang—is removed.

Cuarón also changes the parts that do make it into his film. Harry, Hermione, and Ron now dress like ordinary students entering their teens, instead of wearing magical robes. Ron’s father tells Harry about Sirius Black, instead of Harry overhearing it. The showdown in the Shrieking Shack goes from almost three full chapters to a few short minutes. Several new details are added to what Harry and Hermione do at the end. There are also many digital special effects, computer-generated characters (including the dementors, Buckbeak, and the Whomping Willow), and fancy camera work. In particular, there’s a mindbending shot involving a mirror at the start of Lupin’s first lesson that needs to be seen to be disbelieved.

Future Films
One question nobody knows the answer to at the moment is how much longer Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint will continue to play Harry, Hermione, and Ron. The characters are one year older at the start of each film, but the films are now taking more than a year to complete, which means that the actors are aging faster than the characters. At the moment, all three are working on the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which is being directed by Mike Newell, but no decision has been made on whether they’ll be back for the fifth. The answer is likely to come down to whether audiences would be more upset by having new actors take the place of the main characters, or having those characters played by actors who are a bit too old for the part.

In the meantime, this film has been doing very well. It broke a U.K. record by making more than five million pounds (more than nine million dollars) on the day it was released. It also made more on its opening weekend in the United States than the previous Harry Potter films did, taking in $93.7 million. After its first two weekends, it had made more than $362 million around the world.

Tata nano review ( suraj jangilli)

Tata Nano 2012
DETAILS
  • Make: TATA
  • Model: NANO
  • Edition : L X2012
A vibrant range of colours, which includes a Papaya Orange and Rouge Red, loudly announces the fact that the Tata Nano has been given a makeover. But look beyond the ten new shades of paint it is hard to distinguish the new-for-2012 car from the earlier model. The only real exterior additions to the upgraded Nano are the plastic wheel caps and a passenger-side rear-view mirror, which is a very welcome and essential feature.A vibrant range of colours, which includes a Papaya Orange and Rouge Red, loudly announces the fact that the Tata Nano has been given a makeover. But look beyond the ten new shades of paint it is hard to distinguish the new-for-2012 car from the earlier model. The only real exterior additions to the upgraded Nano are the plastic wheel caps and a passenger-side rear-view mirror, which is a very welcome and essential feature.
The very minute you open the door it becomes abundantly clear that Tata has paid heed to the  feedback of the people and worked hard to pump up the plain and dull interiors of the Nano. The LX model gets a beige dashboard with a silver-finish centre console .The seat fabric is beige too, and this really helps liven up the cabin.
The rear-mounted engine not only improves efficiency but also dramatically improves safety. The engine is also associated with an exclusive engine control management unit that monitors the working of the engine and boost performance. The electronic system is Bosch's new Value Motronic system that is aimed at providing maximum functionality at minimum cost. The system works in conjunction with the sensors, injectors, and other significant hardware. For the first time a two cylinder engine is used in a car with single balancer shaft.
The engine is further mated to a multi-point injection system and a 4-speed manual transmission. In addition, the McPherson strut suspension in the front and the rear independent coil spring helps improve handling and stability of the car. The Nano can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 29.78 seconds with a maximum speed of 105 km/h.
But the best news of all is that Tata has not raised the prices for this updated Nano. The Nano Standard retails for Rs 1.4 lakh , the CX costs Rs 1.7 lakh and the top-end LX has been priced at Rs 1.96 lakhs.
More upmarket, better to drive and all for the same low price, the Nano just got a whole lot more appealing.

Essay on uses and misuses of cinema
                                                         USES AND MISUSES OF CINEMA
There is no gain saying that movies do yeild a tremendous influence in society. The children and the grown ups are equally exposed to the dangerous of the vulgarity and degrading value of cheap popular cinema ,in the guise of entertainment.
Cinema is one of the most beautiful wonder of science. It is a very popular source of recreation for the masses. It was invented by the famous American scientist Edison. The cinema plays a very important role in our educational, social, political and moral life. Thus, it has come to have an important place in our daily life. Film is an important topic among boys and girls.
Both boys and girls, young and old, rich and poor like to see movies either on the television or at cinema house. It is especially a craze among the students. The students will not go to their schools and colleges but visit the cinema halls to see noon shows. On holidays there is a great rush of people belonging to all sections all the cinema houses in all cities.
India produces the largest number of films in the world. Thus cinema has become a part and parcel of our life. Indian film industry employs thousands of workers, technicians, distributors, producers, directors, actors and actresses. Thus it gives employment to a large number of persons. Indian films are also very popular in many other countries of South-East Asia and West-Asia. They are also popular in many communist countries like Russia.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Cinema perhaps has the greatest potential to be the most effective mass media instrument .Besides providing cheap entertainment for the masses ,it can easily become a means of mass instruction and mass education.
The cinema has certainly some clear advantages over other media .It combines primarily .both audio and    video
and is thus very appealing o the eyes and the ears .With the development o f colour cinematography, and stereophonic sound ,it is certainly one upon the other media.
The moral values conveyed through the medium of cinema has lasting effect on the audience. The audience        also has a moral, emotional involvement in the course of events and the roles of various characters, their languages and styles of speaking do leave an impression on the spectators .
The realization of this fact is,perhaps,,the reason for setting up a censor board which scrutinizes all the scenes that are not likely to corrupt the wells of social morality. But the precaution could not be any significance especially today ,when we are exposed to the idiot box they show all possible vulgarity and mean obscene and even pornographic films indiscriminately to the young and the old alike.
In the changing world scenario, where the exposure to television is growing at an alarming rate, creating in minds of the masses, especially the children, a love for false values and vulgarity, one should admit that influence of cinema is fast diminishing.Nevertheless, its influence on society cannot be altogether ruled out.
Cinema is really very cheap source of entertainment for the common people. Every person can afford it by purchasing a ticket worth a few rupees. It gives mental relaxation to the persons who can have an escape from the worries of their life. We can find all sorts of people in the cinema houses, workers and mechanics, girls and boys, rich and beggars.
Cinema is also an important source of information and education for the people. It can teach about the different parts of the world without physically visiting them. The documentary films also increase our knowledge regarding the latest news and happenings in our country and abroad. We can see the scenes of different cities and countries while sitting in the cinema halls.
The cinema can be a great source of education in a developing country like India. The cinema can teach a lot of things regarding political, social, moral and other problems to the masses. It can also impart knowledge to the students in schools and colleges by showing them educational films. By showing them good films we can build their character and broaden their outlook. The impression created by the films is permanent. Therefore, it is essential that only good and constructive films should be shown to the students.
The cinema can bring about many changes in the society. If social films showing the evils of drinking, dowry and large families are shown to the people, then these evils can be rooted out from our society. Similarly, the evils of caste system and communalism can also be condemned in purposeful films. All such films can go a long way in removing these evils. Cinema can also bring about national integration among the people by stressing the emotional unity among them. Similarly, through the films we can teach the people to be law abiding, to keep our cities clean and how to fight against diseases. But films can also do a lot of harm if cheap films showing violence and sex are made. As it is, most of the films produced by our producers are full of violence, nude scenes, rape scenes and cabaret dances. They have a very bad influence on the young boys and girls especially the students. They mislead the students who want to irritate their favourite heros and heroines.
Films showing theft, robbery, cheating and murders have an adverse influence on the students and the youth of our country. They also acquired bad habits like drinking and gambling. Sometimes they learn the art of crime also from the films.
It is, therefore very essential that our government should adopt a very strict censor policy and should not allow the producers to produce such films as spoil the character of our youth. The films should be cleansed of these bad scenes showing rape, cabaret, drinking and gambling. There is no doubt that if decent and constructive films are produced they can bring about a revolution in our society. The films should also provide a message to our countrymen along with entertainment.

Critical Thinking Strategies

Discuss how well reasoned the argument is by following the steps given below:

  • Identify the argument (the main idea) of the passage is.
  • Identify the flaws in the reasoning used, if any. Justify your point of view
  • Elaborate on how the argument could be made stronger

Keep in mind the following concepts for effective critical thinking:
  • alternative explanation — a competing version of what might have caused the events in question that undercuts or qualifies the original explanation because it too can account for the observed facts
  • analysis — the process of breaking something (e.g., an argument) down into its component parts in order to understand how they work together to make up the whole
  • argument — a claim or a set of claims with reasons and evidence offered as support; a line of reasoning meant to demonstrate the truth or falsehood of something
  • assumption — a belief, often unstated or unexamined, that someone must hold in order to maintain a particular position; something that is taken for granted but that must be true in order for the conclusion to be true
  • conclusion — the end point reached by a line of reasoning, valid if the reasoning is sound; the resulting assertion
  • counterexample — an example, real or hypothetical, that refutes or disproves a statement in the argument
  • evaluation — an assessment of the quality of evidence and reasons in an argument and of the overall merit of an argument
Sample Arguments as discussed in class:
  1. Time and again it has been shown that students who attend colleges with low faculty/student ratios get the most well-rounded education. As a result, when my children are ready to attend college, I'll be sure they attend a school with a very small student population.
Which of the following, if true, identifies the greatest flaw in the reasoning above?
    1. A low faculty/student ratio is the effect of a well-rounded education, not its source.
    2. Intelligence should be considered the result of childhood environment, not advanced education.
    3. A very small student population does not by itself, ensure a low faculty/student ratio.
    4. Parental desires and preferences rarely determines a child's choice of a college or university.
    5. Students must take advantage of the low faculty/student ratio by intentionally choosing small classes.
Answer : C
  1. All German philosphers, except for Marx, are idealists.
From which of the following can the statement above be most properly inferred?
    1. Except for Marx, if someone is an idealist philosopher, then he or she is German.
    2. Marx is the only non-German philosopher who is an idealist.
    3. If a German is an idealist, then he or she is a philosopher, as long as he or she is not Marx.
    4. Marx is not an idealist German philosopher.
    5. Aside from the philosopher Marx, if someone is a German, then he or she is an idealist.
          Answer : E

Sample Argument Analysis as discussed in class:

The roads in Mumbai are very bad. BMC is responsible for the maintenance of the roads. Therefore, BMC is a very bad organisation.

Answer points:
Analysing the structure of the argument:
  • The author has stated that the poor maintenance of the roads is sufficient cause to prove that the BMC is a bad organisation.
Conclusion / Main Argument : BMC is a bad organisation.
Premise / Reason(s) given :   Maintenance of the roads is BMC's responsibility and BMC has not fulfilled its role as the condition of the roads are not good.

Identifying the flaws in the argument:
  • The author has stated that the poor maintenance of the roads is sufficient cause to prove that the BMC is a bad organisation.
  • The author assumes that the condition of the roads is only BMC's responsibility and that no external factors caused the bad condition of the roads.
  • Moreover, s/he provides no evidence to justify that the BMC's organisation capability is linked to its maintaining the roads. After all, the BMC could have capably fulfilled its other responsibilities and only been not up to the mark in the case of one of its assignments.
To strengthen the argument:
  • The author should have stated what makes a good organisation and how the BMC fails to meet the standards.
  • The author could also have proven how the BMC alone is responsible for the poor maintenance of the roads.
  • The author should have illustrated how the maintenance of roads and the BMC's organisational capabilities are related.

Review of Transformers 3

Transformers 3

Director: Micheal Bay

Producer: Steven Speilburg

Starring: Shia LaBeouf … Sam Witwicky
             Rosie Huntington-Whiteley … Carly
             Josh Duhamel … Lennox
             John Turturro … Simmons
             Tyrese Gibson … Epps
             Patrick Dempsey … Dylan
            Frances McDormand … Mearing
            John Malkovich … Bruce Brazos

Synopis:
Autobots Bumblebee, Ratchet, Ironhide and Sideswipe led by Optimus Prime, are back in action taking on the evil Decepticons, who are eager to avenge their recent defeat. The Autobots and Decepticons become involved in a perilous space race between the United States and Russia, to reach a hidden Cybertronian spacecraft on the moon and learn its secrets, and once again Sam Witwicky has to come to the aid of his robot friends. The new villain, Shockwave, who rules Cybertron, is on the scene while the Autobots and Decepticons continue to battle it out on Earth.

Analysis;

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' Reunites Sam (Shia Labeouf) and Bumblebee
Like Bay’s prior Transformers films, human drama is the main culprit, sometimes undermining the momentum of the larger story arcs. Dark of the Moon, more than either of its predecessors, struggles to find a compelling place for leading man Sam Witwicky. While the character has some genuinely entertaining moments (most notably an Office Space-like work commentary), the scenes of Sam’s personal life, set-against the struggles of the Autobots and U.S. military, still seem at odds.
Surprisingly, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a welcome improvement in the love-interest department – though her actual character, Carly Spencer, has less of an edge than Megan Fox’s Mikaela Banes. For the most part, despite her professional success, Carly is relegated to damsel in distress – where Banes was presented as a more capable companion for Sam. Unlike the prior installments, the relationship doesn’t bog the film down too much – leaving room for the ensemble cast to do a bit more heavy-lifting. John Malkovich and Alan Tudyk join the franchise to provide comic relief, alongside the returning John Turturro, who is genuinely entertaining and less over-the-top this round.
A number of fan-favorite Transformers also return, including Autobots Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, and Sidewsipe

Megatron looks more furious to take over the earth and kill humanity.Bumblebee becomes more heroic in the film whereas optimus rocks. This film contains some great action and VFX were so good you cant take eyes from it. at start its good, but it seems as dragged in middle, but after one hour fifteen minutes there is only one thing ACTION, ACTION AND ACTION. it is a movie you cant afford to miss it after Cameron's Avatar it is the best 3D action film which gives you goosebumps in every minute The primary character has got a good suspense. Bay worked with the team of Avatar and the results are worth watching. One autobots is damm fantastic it is DRILLER, they used that thing so good you will gonna bite your whole hand.In hindi version Akshay kumar has dubbed for optimus prime, a delight to hear him. Fantastic installment to the series, every time the series is growing to a new heights. SALUTE to Micheal Bay and his team. FULL ON ENTERTAINMENT. The best in the series. And good news Transformers 4 is announced and is gong to release on 2014
